As an avid NFL fan, connoisseur and cheerleader of the sport, I am often left in awe of the achievements achieved on field and off. What fascinates me the most, is the degree to which teams are able to score points. Can an NFL team score 1 point? Well, the answer is quite simple. Yes, it is absolutely possible to score just 1 point in the NFL.
When we consider the intricate nature of this sport, it is quite easy to see why this is the case. NFL teams can attain a single point by way of either a safety or a field goal. All that is required is the team to have possession of the ball in the opposition’s end zone whereby either a tackle is made by the defensive team, or a kicked ball goes over the crossbar and between the two posts of the goal.
In the event that these scenarios should occur, a single point will be counted in favor of the kicking team, and the game will advance from there. The ball will come back to the offensive team for a start on the intervening 20 yard line from there.
I can recall one of the most exciting moments I have ever witnessed in the NFL when a single point was scored. It occurred during the Los Angeles Rams 2018 NFC Championship game against the Saints, with the Rams coming from behind to eventually win the game 26-23. With 0:17 left in the game, the Rams were in peril of losing the game 23-21. They had driven themselves into field goal territory and probably would have settled for the tie and overtime.
However, an amazing sequence of events occurred. The Saints were flagged for a defensive penalty, which enabled the Rams to kick the field goal and earn the miraculous single point and the eventual win. It was a moment that could never be forgotten.
Amidst all this excitement for a single point, it should be noted that such scenarios do not occur regularly in NFL games. Sure, occasionally teams are able to execute a scenario to score just 1 point, but this tends to be the exception rather than the rule. We should also not forget the complexity of the laws of the game, that make it such a challenge in the first place.
The amount of points scored in all NFL games tends to vary vastly. There are games where teams score up to 60 or more points on any given day and other games where teams struggle to reach double digits in total points scored. A single point has a radically different effect to the scoreboard than a full-blown touchdown.
Of course, this should not detract from the importance and excitement of scoring a single point in the NFL. It is a moment every team and fan alike is hoping for every game and it is an undeniable thrill when it goes our way. This is why it is no surprise that so many fans become enthralled by NFL games each and every year.
