I remember watching the week one games and being taken aback watching every team stand in solidarity for the Black Lives Matter movement.​ From seeing Raheem Mostert and other San Francisco 49ers kneeling for the National Anthem to Odell Beckham Jr.​ wearing a shirt that said “obey your reality” during pregame warm-ups, it was clear these players were here to make a statement.​

Every week of games since, we have seen players use their platform to take a stand against racism within our society.​ San Diego Chargers running back Austin Ekeler created the I Know My Rights camp, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes helped launch a Today Show initiative as well as raise funds for future and current black entrepreneurs, and Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson wrote an op-ed in the Players Tribune discussing the significance of systematic racism in our world today.​

These black NFL players are using their platform and status of being one of the most televised sports in the world to bring awareness to topics they are so passionate about.​ All of the players I mentioned have put in a lot of hard work into their craft on top of using their voices to be part of the social justice movement and fight for the cause.​

The NFL experience is, without a doubt, like no other.​ From the long-standing rivalries, to the edge-of-your-seat plays, cheering on your favorite players — it’s something that everyone should experience at least once.​

I remember my first NFL game as if it were yesterday.​ I had stayed up late before game day, doodling my favorite team’s logo on any piece of blank paper I could find.​ Then, in the pre-dawn morning light, my mom and I piled into our old, rusty minivan and set off for the stadium.​

The sun was just peeking over the horizon as we drove up.​ The roads were so packed that I could barely take in all the excitement buzzing through the air.​ Fans draped in their team’s colors, kids with foam fingers, and the smell of hotdogs and nachos? Other aspects, such as the merchandise available to purchase can bring out the inner fan-girl in everyone.​ There are t-shirts, hoodies, keychains — you name it.​

The stadium itself adds to the energy of the game.​ Cheerleaders dance while spanning the side lines and the sound of the crowd is deafening.​ It truly sets the stage for NFL greatness.​

There’s no denying the power of watching an NFL game in person.​ The roar of the crowds, the sound of the band, the sight of the mascots and cheerleaders — it’s more than just an ordinary football game.​ It’s an experience that can’t be recreated.​

The released players included defensive tackle Akeem Spence, tight end Clive Walford, wide receiver Leonte Carroo and kicker Jason Sanders.​ All of these players had played an integral role in the Dolphins’ success and they will be sorely missed.​ I couldn’t help thinking about all the great moments we’d shared together- from some of Spence’s incredible tackles to Carroo’s go-ahead touchdown reception against the Raiders.​

As the news was breaking, I heard some controversy around the releases- why did the Dolphins cut them exactly? We will never know, but it’s likely that the team was seeking flexibility with their salary cap and needed to simplify down to a smaller payroll.​ But it still hurt to see good players go, regardless of why.​

As the dust settled, I reflected on the NFL players released this week and all the other players cut from their teams over the years- it’s a bittersweet feeling, because while we move on and get new, talented players for our teams, we also lose part of the team’s history.​ Someone else might have great success with the same player that we let go, but it makes it a lot harder to connect with them.​

The competition came with several activity challenges, each accompanied by unique prizes for the respective winners.​ This was great because it rewarded the most dedicated fans with something tangible.​ Thus, it was inclusive to all sorts of fan levels.​

Armed with enthusiasm, I went about completing the activity activities.​ It was quite the spectacle.​ I had no idea that the NFL could get this creative in designing fun activities that were interactive as well as challenging – all while keeping the spirit of football alive.​

Each challenge gave me an opportunity to add points or remove points from the other teams, thereby helping me nudge my team a little closer to the end goal –the championship.​ Every activity completed was another milestone crossed and I was inching closer and closer to the champion’s spot.​

As the competition progressed, I gained points with each accomplishment, while the other teams gained points too.​ The challenge of the competition was that balance points, so that it was not too much of a runaway race.​

The races got tougher and more competitive as time went on, but I was determined to remain persistent and keep pushing forward.​ I ended up taking first place and winning the championship title.​ I was totally elated.​

The Wheel of NFL Teams competition gave me a much-needed reminder that it’s all about having fun and competing in a thrilling sports setting.​ Perhaps more importantly, it also taught me firsthand that with dedication and hard work, you can always come out on top.​

Since then, I’ve been a major advocate of the competition.​ In my opinion, it revolutionizes the way the NFL is thought of and it gives fans the opportunity to be more involved than ever before.​ What’s more, it promotes team spirit in amazing ways – not to mention the many benefits it gives to those who learn to persist with their efforts.​

I’m also proud to say that my team has continued to excel in the competition, emerging the champion and outperforming all the other teams multiple times.​ In my books, this success is nothing short of spectacular and a huge testament to the potential of my favorite team.​
